Four days ago, I told you about the tragic story of three St. Bernard dogs belonging to the Cardenas family that were all killed by snare traps in Casper, Wyoming.
A sad and tragic tale indeed. The three St Bernards were all three years of age and the Cardenas family did everything with their “kids” who played an integral part of their lives. I can’t imagine their heartbreak of losing three dogs in such a devastating manner.
Two of the dogs were caught in the snare traps while searching for the third dog. The two dogs couldn’t be rescued and the third dog was already dead in another snare trap.
Snare traps are cruel and inhumane. The number of dogs trapped each year in these noose-strangling traps is one-too-many but Brian Olsen, Wildlife Supervisor of the Wyoming Game and Fish Casper region, says the he has never seen anything like this in his career with this department.
According to the Born Free USA’s online non-target trapping incident database, three other pet dogs have been caught in traps in Wyoming this year, adding to the hundreds of thousands of unintended trapping deaths and injuries across the United States.
Snare traps are made of wire or string which will tighten as any animal pulls against it. The more the animal struggles, the tighter the noose becomes. This, in turn, causes more struggling and suffering.
The snare trap is designed to kill by strangulation or crushing of vital organs. Snare traps can also catch an animal by any body part including legs which is also very common.
It’s time for this to change.
Wanting to know if it was possible to get these barbaric traps banned since they are legal in Wyoming (and elsewhere), I posed this question to Adam M. Roberts, CEO of Born Free USA.
According to Mr. Roberts, “Compassionate citizens across America must reach out to their city councils urging local bans on trapping near schools and other populated areas; urging state legislatures to end use of barbaric steel jaw leg hold traps; and urging their elected officials in Washington, DC to end trapping in the National Wildlife Refuge System.”
Now is a good time to voice your opinion to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the local Game Commissioner and legislators, and Wyoming Governor Matt Mead.
It does NOT matter in which state you live because this tragedy happened on public lands open for all citizens.
“Only when voters speak out will considered legislative action occur,” – Adam M.Roberts.

They should at the very least have signs there are snare traps. How many traps were set? Three dogs killed from the same family is astounding. Why does anyone use snare traps any way? They are beyond cruelcor any animal. poor babies and my sympathies to the Cardenas family.

This makes me physically ill to read this. Snare traps are death traps. There doesn’t seem to be any way of surviving one.I guess that’s the whole purpose. Way to cruel for even wildlife.

Born Free proves this happened before yet the council member says he never heard of this happening. I think they better get a better grasp of what’s happening in their own state.

As soon as I observed this site I went on reddit to share some of this information with them.

I am signing this petition. I wonder if the petition will do anything since they’re considered legal. Hanging is a horrific way in which to die. Way too much suffering. How can this be legal??

Please, Born Free USA, Adam Roberts, get them to stop these inhumane traps. Please.

How many people do we need to make this change, Mr. Roberts? I can do what I can do. I will help spread the word. What else can we do??
