Are you seeing the dead deer along the roadways again? My trip to Quakertown this past Saturday was only the latest number of deer casualties I’ve seen. That particular trip yielded at least four dead deer. Along highways in my area, I have seen quite a few dead deer.
Why is this occurring now? I haven’t read any articles in the paper about this latest phenomenon as we did last fall when reporters speculated that the high number of deer being killed then was as a result of deer hunting which it wasn’t. It was due to the pre-rut and the rut season of deer when the male’s testosterone rages and they begin to run after does much like our politicians. Sorry.
But that is not the case with the latest fatalities. May and June is the time of year when does are giving birth to their fawns. They are seeking out areas where they plan to give birth and in the process they push out all deer to protect their fawns. Does are very protective of their offspring.
The deer that are pushed out run onto highways and back roads and subsequently deer are being killed, once again.
In your travels, watch out for the deer. I know firsthand the damage a deer can do to your vehicle. Not once, but twice, it happened to me. Both deer did die as a result of the accidents. There was nothing that could have prevented the clashes between my cars and the deer since they literally ran out in front of me.
The deer that I see along the roads could very well be other does. Sadly, their fawns die along with them. Once again, be cautious when driving. The life you save may not only be your own but the lives of three deer. (Does tend to have twins.)
