URL – Utah’s 1st “Porn Dog”

Weber County Sheriff’s Office in Utah has introduced their latest weapon used in fighting child pornography – URL.  URL- pronounced Earl,  is the state’s first electronic detection K-9.  He will be able to find electronic devices such as SD cards, SIM cards, USB sticks, thumb drives and more.   He is trained in smelling chemicals found stored in electronic media especially devices child pornographers may try to hide.

URL is one of nine certified electronic detection K-9s in the nation.

URL was trained by the same man who trained K-9,  Bear, who was instrumental in finding a key piece of evidence in the prosecution of Jared Fogle, former Subway spokesperson involved in child pornography.

URL is 17 months old and has gone through six months of training.  URL was returned twice by families to animal shelters before being chosen to be trained as a “porn dog.”   His handler, detective Cameron Hartman, a member of the of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, says “URL has an incredible nose.”

Hartman said URL may be used to find contraband such as smuggled cellphones in the Weber County Jail.

URL has already assisted in serving two search warrants in two task force cases and was able to find hidden devices at another house, Hartman said.

URL’s main job will be finding small electronic devices that child pornographers may try to hide giving him the nickname, “porn dog.”
