Ava recovering from her amputation
Last week I had written an article on Jamie and Lewis Schur’s dog, Ava. Their tiny Chihuahua had been in the wrong place as her “siblings” fought over food. Ava’s right, front leg was stepped on and fractured by her 75 lb. sibling and she needed to be seen by a vet.
Jamie and Lewis Shur have run into a financial slump and needed funds because no veterinarian would even look at Ava to help her without payment on the spot. With the help of the GoFundMe page for Ava which Jamie set up after two friends informed her of this website, the Shurs were able to raise $1545 minus the percentage the website gets to help with Ava’s care.
Due to the outpouring of generosity by others, Ava was finally seen and eventually scheduled for surgery to remove her front leg. After reviewing their options with their veterinarian, Dr. Steve, of the Bernville Vet Clinic, they decided amputation was the best choice since too much time had lapsed from the original injury (through no fault of their own.)
Two days ago on Wednesday, December 3rd, Ava finally had the operation to remove the transverse fractured leg.
Ava’s mom, Jamie, tells me that Wednesday was a very long day and she and her family are still recuperating from it. (Hope all are feeling better today!)
Ava’s tiny size posed a bit of trouble with anesthesia so she was only given a light amount and a morphine drip. They were also unable to give her as much pain medication due to her small body.
It took a very long time for Ava to come out of the groggy state and once she did, Ava only got worse, according to Jamie. Ava and Jamie did not sleep Wednesday night.
By early yesterday morning, Ava had improved a lot. She stopped her crying and whimpering.
As of last night, Ava is doing extremely well! She is bright-eyed and wagging her tail! She keeps trying to walk around and is very good at walking on three legs. Ava is supposed to be crated for 14 days but Jamie isn’t sure that Ava will agree to that.
Ava’s amputation created a six-inch long incision with twenty staples. She will return to the vet in two weeks to get them removed. The Schur’s are making sure Ava stays as still as can be and watching her wound so no infection invades the incision area.
The Schur’s are grateful to everyone for their help and generosity during a most difficult time. If there is any money remaining in Ava’s Fund, the Schur’s will be donating it to another needy animal.
We’re just glad Ava received veterinary care and is a happy tripawd!
Get well, Ava!

She’s so tiny. The anesthesia could’ve killed her. Obviously, this vet knew what he was doing. Sad to hear she lost her leg but glad to hear about compassion coming from others. We don’t get enough of that. I’m shocked that no vet would look at her if they knew her leg was broken. Don’t they some kind of oath to help animals in need? Feel better, Ava.

Hi Tina and readers!
Just wanted to give you all a quick update on little Ava! She is doing GREAT! She is back to getting in trouble and keeps figuring out how to remove her bandanna that Dr. Steve and his staff gave her. No matter how I tie it, she gets it off! She is loving getting SOOO much attention, as she is to be either crated or held at all times for 14 days. She is not having any pain issues and is just an amazing little girl! Thank you so much for your posts and comments! <3
