This weekend, Saturday, November 14th, and Sunday, November 15th, the National Dog Show will be held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and will be televised on Thanksgiving day.
The Kennel Club of Philadelphia hosts these shows and are sanctioned by The American Kennel Club (AKC) . According to their website, the shows help to raise money for a variety of canine-related causes. The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine benefited from these shows in the past. I’ve been to this School of Veterinary Medicine and I found it to be a phenomenal place to help our pets.
Being impressed with one of the beneficiaries of the National Dog Show does not make me want to see a show that literally promotes puppy mills and animal cruelty.
According to a blog post by Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the HSUS, he had written about an Australian Cattle dog named Wild Bill (pictured) who once was an AKC Champion. He won ribbons for his good looks. As he got older, he was no longer worthy of winning ribbons or being a champion.
This once famous dog was eventually found by local law enforcement in a Missouri PUPPY MILL with more than 60 dogs. According to Pacelle, he was starving living in a filthy, rusted crate in inches of feces-infested water.
Who inspected this puppy mill and gave the place a favorable/clean inspection report prior to being found living like this, you might ask? An AKC inspector!!
Wild Bill and the 60 plus dogs were rescued by the Pearl River County SPCA. These dogs were lucky unlike many other dogs who are forced to live in this hell 24/7 for their entire lives unless they are one of the lucky ones who are rescued.
The Missouri puppy mill owner who had Wild Bill was charged with animal cruelty and pled guilty to the charges.
What does this say about the AKC? Not only do they say it’s okay for dogs to live like this but they readily hand out AKC papers to puppy mill farmers for their puppies to sold in pet stores and over the internet.
This year the AKC will be introducing seven new breeds at the show. Since 2003, the AKC has introduced 40 new dog breeds. Last year two new breeds were entered into the show with one being the Coton de Tulear- a non=sporting dog. I hosted two television programs to help the groups who breed Cotons (responsible, not puppy miils) who were fighting the AKC from registering the breed in their organization.
Including a new breed into the AKC ultimately means is that the new breeds will be found in puppy mills because the public will find them enticing and want to buy them. The AKC knows this as do the puppy mill farmers. They both profit off the misery of the breeding of dogs.
According to the HSUS, the AKC has opposed more than 80 laws in 2012 that would protect dogs from cruelty in puppy mills. Today that number has climbed to more than 150,
It all comes down to money. The AKC makes money off puppy mills by registering their puppies. The more breeds there are the more money the AKC makes each year. Their Political Action Committee, according to Pacelle, has “funneled thousands of dollars to politicians who oppose animal welfare reform.”
The National Dog Show gives the illusion they care about the dogs when in reality, they are promoting the worst in show. This is hypocrisy at its best.

The AKC is nothing but a group of greedy evil people who don’t care about the welfare of dogs. The public is fooled by their propaganda machine which the media perpetuates without investigating the truth behind their real purpose.

Dog shows are as bad as horse races. Once they’re no longer winners many are sent to the slaughterhouse. They use animals to make money and dispose of them like trash when no longer viable.

Absolutely horrifying!! Stop this!!

Tina, you are so dead on right about this. The AKC is a sham! Thank you for being so truthful in your writing. I really admire you!

I enjoy watching this show. I didn’t know the AKC did this. I’ll probably still watch it. I enjoy watching the different breeds of dogs.
