Susan Johnson, 49, who had her father, Hyrum Long, 75, use a hammer to hit her dog,Molly, on the head to “euthanize” her in October while she was buried up to her neck has received a three month jail sentence and post prison supervision. UPDATE: In addition to the jail time, Susan was given 2 yrs. probation, 100 hours of community service and will not be allowed to have a pet for five years. Five years is not long enough time for me but I’m glad to hear there is justice finally being served for such a horrific act of animal cruelty. Too many times people are given a slap on the wrist. This doesn’t appear to be the case here. Once again, people were encouraged to call the prosecutor’s office and voice their outrage. Our voices do make a difference!! Many thanks to all that called.
This case received national attention when Molly was found yelping as she was buried alive up to her neck in the backyard of these two people. The neighbor removed a log that was placed on top of Molly’s head. Police and Animal Control Officers arrived on the scene and removed her battered while still alive.
Molly was subsequently euthanized at the local humane society because of the blow to her head. There was no evidence of cancer as Johnson suggested after a necropsy was performed.
Do you feel the sentence was fair? Hyrum should be receiving a stronger sentence. I’ll keep you posted.
