D-Boy saved his family from possible harm and a home invasion when he went after an intruder who broke through a family’s front door. D-boy is the family dog belonging to the Trawick family.
After the intruder broke through the Trawick’s family’s front door and pointed a gun at Roberta Trawick and told her to get down on the ground, D-boy ran into the living room and proceeded to go after the intruder. Before D-boy could make contact with the intruder, he was shot three times- with one shot penetrating his head.
Somehow D-boy survived three bullets- I don’t know how, but he did. The vet says D-boy’s hard head is what saved him.
The intruder has not been found.
What I find interesting is that D-boy is a pitbull which I’m sure conjures up all types of stereotypes. This is the breed of choice in dogfighting rings. Pitbulls have gotten a bad reputation over the years. This breed has been banned in some cities. I know many people are scared to death of pitbulls.
Whether you agree or not that pitbulls are bad, one can’t disagree that D-boy is a hero to his family and others. Perhaps people feel since D-boy is a pitbull that is why he attacked the intruder. In general, pitbulls love people and they are actually a poor choice for a guard dog. I said “in general”.
I have been around many pitbulls and I have seen both good and bad temperments. I have been up close and personal with pitbulls who were part of huge dogfighting ring from NewYork. Let me tell you , all of the dogs were so sweet to humans, particularly the one who was used as a bait dog. But there was an instance when two of these dogs got out of their cages and attacked each other. They weren’t interested in hurting people but to get to the other dog. That is what they were bred to do. Sickening!
I have also seen good and bad qualities in other breeds as well. All dogs have the propensity to bite. Some of the nastiest bites come from small breeds. One of the nicest, most well-behaved dogs I ever met was a young pitbull. He was a stray but it was obvious someone taught him obedience. I simply fell in love with this guy. He was one of the lucky pitbulls- he found a home. It is more difficult to find suitable homes for pitbulls in animal shelters.
Some of the most well-behaved dogs I have met have been pitbulls. They can be goofy, fun-loving, loyal and eager to please their human counterparts. Does that make me the right person to have a pitbull? No! Pitbulls can be great dogs in the “RIGHT” hands. People who want a pitbull as a pet must understand the breed and its temperment.
As I had said people must understand the temperment, the rules of socialization for the breed etc. Pitbulls can be dog-aggressive meaning they may start a fight with another dog. Every case is different. That is why it is imperative someone who has thorough knowledge of the breed. I am not thoroughly versed on the breed- that is why I wouldn’t make an ideal candidate to have a pitbull at this point in my life.
Pitbulls have received a bad rap particularly with the dogfighting rings and dog bites across the country. Pitbulls aren’t even ranked as the number one breed for dog bites. It may be the end result that receives the national attention of their bites. In most cases, the bottomline always comes back to the owner and how that dog was cared for in that home. In the “WRONG” hands, these dogs are dangerous and a menace to society. In the “RIGHT” hands, these dogs are loving, gentle and loyal and become such an important, loving part of the family. Some even become heroes.
Don’t judge pitbulls- judge the owners!!! Does Michael Vick ring a bell????
