This entire week is calling for temperatures to reach into the 90’s in southeast PA. This is a reminder for everyone to bring in their pets so they may stay cool like you and me.
Provide plenty of water so your pet may cool down. Don’t leave or keep your pet outdoors for long periods of time. Walk them during the coolest times of the day.
Most importantly, use common sense. Try wearing a fur coat in this weather and you can feel what your pet feels in this hot, humid heat!
If you see a pet in distress, whether it be stuck outside with no proper shelter or water or left in a car, please call your local animal shelter. For Berks County residents, call the Animal Rescue League at 610-373-8830, the Humane Society at 610-921-2348 or call your local police. Don’t hesitate. A pet’s life may be at stake.
We have to be voices for those who have none.
Here are some tips from the American Humane Association to keep your pet safe during the summer.
Even if your pet exercises regularly, consider scaling back on the length of time you are out, or take it out in the morning or evening when it’s cooler.
Never leave your pet in the car even for a few minutes and even with the windows down. Cars can become an oven in a matter of minutes and pets can die.
Even if your pet has suffered heat stroke and you’ve managed to cool him down, it’s still a good idea to let a veterinarian check it, because internal organs can be affected several hours after your dog has cooled down.
