A court date has been set for Mikel Long, the Philadelphia Police Officer who placed his pit bull in a trash bag in Wissachickon Valley Park and left her to die last November. The dog now named Cranberry was found by a hiker and her dog the day before Thanksgiving. She was emaciated, cold, and scared. She had part of a black sheet tied around her neck. The remaining part of the sheet was found in Long’s residence.
Long will face a judge on Monday, April 24th in the Philadelphia Municipal Court at 10 AM in Room 404. He is facing four misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. Animal abuse is not a felony in the state of Pennsylvania. Long, most likely, will not face jail time for his abhorrent act of animal cruelty against a dog who was entrusted to a police officer when he adopted her last year.
Long was arrested on March 23rd.
Cranberry, named in honor of Thanksgiving, has made a full recovery and was adopted in December by Jimmy Huntley. Her microchip led her to Long who has been an 11 year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Force.

The Philadelphia Police Force says Long will be fired after his 30 day suspension has expired.

What a piece of scum?. I wish he could have done to him what he did to Cranberry.

Watching Cranberry in the video makes me feel so good and I’m so glad she was save. I can’t help but think what she went through. Left to die. If not for the hiker she wouldn’t be alive. How could a cop do that?
Will says
What happened to this dirt bag? put him away. Has he been fired? The police chief better keep his word. No animal abusers on a police force.

I believe his hearing was continued. As far as I know he has not been fired but I will check on that. Thanks.
Go straight to jail says
What’s the matter with you Mikel Long? How could you do this to your own dog? Are you crazy? You must be.
Gary says
If he’s acquitted can he get his job back?
Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein says
I heard he may sue to get his job back if he is acquitted but I highly doubt that will happen in this case.
Thanks!

Hi there, I read through a few of your articles here.
I did have a question though that I hope you could answer. I was wondering, Are the risks of being
a police officer worth the rewards? I just got out of highschool and I’m thinking
of becoming a cop. I would really appreciate any help you
could give me!
