Earlier this week, a dachshund named Chanel was on the Today show with her owners proclaiming her to be the world’s oldest dog at the age of 21. Chanel was going to be named the world’s oldest dog by Guiness World Records. However, since that story aired, another owner of a terrier mix has now come forward claiming to have the world’s oldest dog. His name is Max.
According to Max’s owner, she has the original papers to prove when she got him- August 9th, 1983 which makes him nearly 26 years old.
You can see Chanel and Max’s story here. I would never guess how old they are by seeing this video. Both wear sunglasses when they go outside due to cataracts and Max has a mild case of arthritis. But all in all, these two remarkable dogs are simply amazing to me.
The oldest dog to die on record was Blue, an Australian Cattle dog, who died in 1939 at the age of 29 yrs. and 5 months!! Smaller breeds tend to live longer- a fact. But a dog of the size of an Australian Cattle dog to live that long- unbelievable!
So who will win the Guiness World Record for oldest dog? My bet goes to Max since his owner has the proof.
I had a dog who lived to be 16 yrs. old. I thought that was long life for a medium-sized dog. I literally grew up with him.
It also not unheard of cats living to be in their 20’s. I knew a woman who had a cat for 25 yrs.!
But having said that, do you wish your beloved dog would live to be 20 – 30 yrs. old? Now that is a lifetime commitment and reponsibility.
I do congratulate both dogs on living long lives and kudos to their owners for obviously taking such good care of them.
