An article in yesterday’s Reading Eagle announced the retirement of Officer James D. Howe of the Reading K-9 Police Force. Jim actually retired August 31st.
Jim not only had overseen the K-9 unit, he was the trainer for the new K-9 unit during the last couple of years. I was priveleged to be invited to this year’s graduation for the last three officers and their K-9 partners.
I also had the honor of having him on my tv show a couple of times.
What struck me about Jim is his straightfowardness, honesty and integrity. He may have a tough exterior but he has a heart of gold. I am truly saddened to hear that that the Reading Police has lost a true a man so dedicated to the K-9 Unit as Jim was.

“There were dogs in my family virtually all my life, and in the early 1980s I attended a Reading police K-9 demonstration at the Fourth of July festivities at Reading Stadium,” Howe recalled. “I had wanted to be a Reading police officer since high school, but after watching that K-9 demo, I knew that I wanted to be a handler with the Reading Police Department.”Howe’s wish came true. He graduated from the Reading Police Academy in 1987 and was sworn in as a city officer in June 1988. Four years later he was accepted into the K-9 Unit. He worked with two police dogs, Bear and Zor, over the years and in 2008 was asked by Chief William M. Heim to train and oversee the reorganized K-9 Unit.Howe, who grew up near Second and Oley streets and spent most of his life in Reading, said he misses working with the six city dogs and their handlers, but retirement has given him a chance to focus more on himself and getting into a better routine of weightlifting, running and the martial arts, things that went to the back burner during the long hours training and supervising the K-9 unit.
