According to WFMZ, the hottest day of summer is upon us. Temperatures are supposed to reach into the 90’s. The heat index will make the temperature rise to 100 degrees. Berks County has issued a hot weather advisory for today.
Please take special precautions for you and your pets during these dog days of summer.
Make sure your pet has plenty of fresh, clean water. Don’t exercise or walk your pet during the hottest part of the day. Walk your dog during the early morning or late evening hours.
Don’t leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle under any circumstances. It takes but a few minutes for your car to heat up to temperatures well above 100 degrees. Trust me on that one. I did my own experiment with a thermometer (no pets were involved!) and it is true. It won’t take long for your best friend to suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The outcome can be very deadly!
If you see a pet in a parked car with no one in sight , don’t hesitate to call the police or your local animal shelter. You could be saving this pet’s life! Do what you have to do.
Use common sense…….we overheat in this hot weather……as a reminder, check on elderly family members and neighbors as well….so many sit in their homes with no ventilation…..we can’t forget about our own.
As I said, use common sense with your pet…..if you’re hot, imagine what it feels like to your pet who has to wear a fur coat 24/7!!!!
