The HSUS Emergency Services Team responded to a call about a horse to be used in yesterday’s inaugural parade after it had been struck by a truck.
The horse named Mouse, a 10 yr. old appaloosa, was struck before the parade began and left Mouse with his rear leg caught in the front grill of the heavy-duty truck.
HSUS said they came upon a bloody mess when they saw the mangled leg and multiple lacerations. HSUS officials thought Mouse would have to be euthanized. After two hours to untangle the leg, they were able to get Mouse to stand up and be transported to Prince George’s County Equestrian Center- YAY!
In another case at yesterday’s parade, a 23 yr. old horse named Showtime, who is an apaloosa- palamino cross, fell ill from gastric distress. HSUS treated him and he was able to be in the parade. Showtime is the only surviving horse from the 1993 inaugural parade.
Pets were not allowed in the vicinity of the parade but the HSUS, along with other animal welfare organizations, was asked to provide animal welfare services for yesterday’s festivities.
I’m glad the horse’s life was spared.
