The aftermath and destruction of Hurricane Harvey is of epic proportion. It is reminiscent of Hurricane Katrina (2005) where nearly 700,000 animals perished in the wake of that historic storm. This time around, preparations were initiated before the storm by various agencies but as the news reports have shared, there are still many animals who have been left behind.
National groups have descended upon the area but it is the grassroots or local shelters/rescues who, in reality, need the most help from the public. Many shelters are non-functioning which has led other groups to step up and help wherever necessary.
The following groups are helping the animals and in need of donations and funding. Click on each link to find out the personal needs of each organization. Financial donations are greatly needed for the weeks and possibly months of taking care of many animals. If you live locally, you can always inquire about volunteering your services.
In no particular order is a list of animal organizations who are in need. If you know of other shelters or rescues who are asking for donations and/or items, you can either leave the name in the comments section or email me at tevangelistaepp@yahoo.com. I will add them to the list. Thank you!

Wow that aquarium was destroyed! We’re the fish killed? I’d rather give to a shelter there than give to one of the huge groups who will make a mint from this catastrophic hurricane.
Ida says
A lot of scams going on out there because of this hurricane. Have to be careful who you give your money to. People will take advantage even in a tragedy. Research first to see if a place actually needs any extra donations money whatever. Don’t give to the big time corporations. I’m getting those emails on a daily basis asking for my money. They already send me emails all the time asking for money. You can’t tell me that they don’t have enough money to help these animals. They just want to hoard your money.
Martina says
Contact the local shelters in those areas and see what they need. I’d rather give physical items they need instead of money. Too many scams involved when it comes to these tragedies.

The HSUS is notoriously known for not having a shelter of their own. They rescue animals then give them to other shelters. They make themselves look good and then put the work on others. Shoddy!
Cali says
I call to see what the shelters need and then purchase or give what I already have in my possession.

How many of them misused funds?
