Axel (pictured above) was a K-9 Officer and partner of Sergeant John Hill of the Allentown Police Department who died last month of cancer. He was a six year veteran of the force.
Today , a memorial service was held with Police Officers in attendance to honor his memory with the department.
I did not know Axel but I am aware of the bond that a Police Officer shares with his K-9 partner. Once they become partners, they are together 24/7.
Yesterday I was at a live remote with WEEU where many dog rescues were present including Friends of the Reading Police K-9’s. Keith Claytor, Vice-President of this organization was in attendance and he and I ended up talking about the untimely death of Axel.
It is very sad that Axel died so young. His partner, Sgt. Hill, was with him to the end, Keith told me.
During our conversation, we talked about our local Reading Police K-9 Unit and how the dogs that are now on the street are doing a fantastic job in the city. Keith told me how they are deterring crime each and every week. He said they are doing a great job!
When criminals see police officers with the dogs, they give up rather quickly, Keith said. I find it ironic. Police Officers have guns. Guns! And these same people resist the officers. When the dogs are present, it stops them every time. Amazing!! That is why it is imperative Reading have this K-9 Unit. Even though there is serious talk of laying off police officers due to the city budget problem, the Rdg. K-9 Unit will not be affected by those actions. The K-9 Unit will continue. YAY!!
And the three new dogs being trained for their positions should be graduating as early as next month. Three more dogs on the streets of Reading. Can’t wait!
My condolences to Sergeant John Hill on the death of his partner and beloved pet, Axel.
