Factory Farming- what is it? Take a good look at this picture and it may you give you just a small sample of where your ham comes from. This is what a hog confinement or piggery looks like. Did you know that pigs don’t see the light of day until the day they are slaughtered?
Did you picture farm animals grazing out in fields, free-roaming until they are slaughtered? That would be an ideal picture but factory farming is something entirely different. Think of puppymills – mass producing animals with little or no veterinary care with the outcome of making the most profit.
Chickens were the first animals that were factory farmed back in the 1920’s when it was discovered that vitamins could be added to their food which led the farmers to realize the chickens no longer needed exercise and sunlight for growth. Thus, they could keep alot of chickens confined to small areas and mass produce them.
Cows, turkeys, sheep, rabbits and fish are the other animals that are kept in these awful factory farms.
Join me with my guest Erin Williams, Communications Director of the HSUS for the Factory Farming Campaign tomorrow night on BCTV at 6:30PM as we discuss the issue of factory farming and the implications involved with this business.
This show will show some graphic footage of what goes on behind the scenes at a pig farm. You will be forewarned before it is shown.
