In celebration of National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week from November 5th-11th, pet lovers and animal advocates are encouraged to reach out and support their local shelters and rescue groups.
Approximately 3,500 animal shelters across the United States serve the estimated 6-8 million homeless animals who need refuge each year, and many more animals find themselves in need of the services provided by local rescue groups.

National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week was inspired by the Capitol Humane Society in Lincoln, Nebraska. It encourages people to become acquainted with their local shelters and recues and to learn how they can assist their lifesaving work.
Ten ways to celebrate
Here are ten tips for helping your local shelter and rescues. Pick the activity—you don’t have to stop at just one—that appeals to you. Then ask your friends, coworkers, classmates, and family to join you in celebrating the people who help make life better for the animals and people in your community.
