This is a very heartbreaking and disturbing case involving a dog who was surrendered to the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) in Arizona. The dog was taken immediately to their own urgent medical care clinic. The dog had to be groomed asap to determine the extent of any injuries underneath the matted and knotted up hair. Maggots were eating away at a rear leg injury.
While being groomed, the dog’s infected leg fell off of his body. There had been no circulation to this leg. His leg was successfully amputated by Dr. Steve Gilson at Pet Urgent Care, LLC . There were no other options for this poor dog. His medical expenses were paid by Two Pups Wellness Fund.
The pup now named Chance is doing much better but he is timid. Who can blame him after what he’s endured? Look at that face! Chance needs someone who really understands what it means to love him! Tripawds can get around quite well but you need to understand their limitations.
Chance will be available for adoption in a week or two. This shelter wants Chance to have a second chance at a much better life! His adoption fee will be $50 at the West Shelter. His ID is #A4007448.
If you live in or near Maricopa County, Arizona, please check out Chance! I don’t know if there will be charges against the former owner.

If The person who surrendered this dog was the owner than that owner should be charged with neglect or possibly abuse. This dog suffered a lot. Having maggots infested in your leg -can you imagine the pain ?the inability to walk on that leg ?the matting of your hair ,the pulling of it not knowing what it’s like to really feel like the cute little dog he is ? This is abuse . A dog’s legs falls off during grooming. Can’t be anything else other than abuse and the owner needs to be charged with it that’s it!

Chance did suffer. Haven’t been told of the circumstances surrounding what and why this happened. I would agree this borders on abuse but it doesn’t mean the charge will be animal abuse. It could be animal neglect. This should never happen to any animal! Poor Chance.
Thanks!

I agree that it’s abuse and not neglect. Chance lived through a tough ordeal and in a lot of pain. It all depends of circumstances to see if the person is charged at all.

What kind of monster lets their dogs hair get so long that it becomes matted and maggots eat the Leg away? If the owner couldn’t afford to get the dog groomed then the person should’ve surrender the dog or ask people for money to get the dog groomed. Letting your dogs hair get so long that it becomes not it is not only neglect but abuse. And too many dogs have been found in shelters with their hair and furso mattedat that they have to shave off wings of fur from their bodies. Its so disgusting.

I agree the owner should’ve asked for help before it ever got to the point of a leg falling off. Because I don’t know the circumstances surrounding, it’s hard to say why this dog was left to suffer. Still, the person needed to get help for the dog.
Thanks.

What the he!! is wrong with people? For a leg to lose circulation causing the leg to fall off means this was happening for a long time. It didn’t happen overnight, that’s for sure. This makes me sick and mad as hell. Why do animals have to suffer at the hands of humans? Why are people so dumb? Why did this dog have to lose his leg? I’ll never understand the actions of people. smh
Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein says
You’re right. This isn’t a case of something happening in a short amount of time. I don’t know why the owner didn’t ask for or get help for his/her dog.
Chance lost his leg because he wasn’t taken care of properly.
Thanks.

The adoption fee is cheap compared to where I live. Dogs can cost over a hundred bucks and that’s at a shelter. Don’t get me started on rescues and what they charge.
Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein says
The adoption fee is vey reasonable. I hope Chance finds a great home and never endures anything remotely close to neglect again in his life.
Thanks.

This is why I get along better with animals than people.
