Last Thurday, July 7th, the Providence Animal Center Humane Society came upon a scene where an adult Akita mix was chained to a cinder block in a back yard in 1300 block of Vauclain Street, Chester, Delaware County, Pa. Humane Officer, Ron Riggle, found the dog but “he was seizing because of the heat and passed in front of our officer’s eyes as he was trying to save him,” said the Providence Animal Center PR Director, Justina Calgiano.
The Akita’s body temperature registered higher than 111 degrees and as a result, steam escaped from the dog’s body as their vet, Dr. Kimberly Boudwin, performed the necropsy. Grass was found inside the dog’s intestines but no food.
Another dog was found by the officer. A pit bull terrier was in a wire crate that was covered by cardboard which shielded the dog from the sun and, most likely, saving his life.
Inside the house two dogs were found along with a bearded dragon and fish. The dogs were covered in their own feces and urine inside their crates. No food was found and only small bowls of water were there.
The dogs look younger than their true age due to malnourishment. One is six months old but appears to be four months old. Another dog is eight months old but appears to be six months old.
The owner is a woman who has signed over all of the remaining animals. She is currently on vacation and an “investigation is ongoing with the intention to press charges”, said Calgiano.
Neighbors saw the dogs in the yard since last Tuesday. The humane officer showed up last Thursday.
The dogs have new names, Jack, Janet, and Chrissy- characters from an old show, “Three’s Company.”
“All are drastically underweight, malnourished, had high body temperatures upon arrival and show clear signs of neglect including sores all over their bodies,” said Calgiano.
She noted that financial support is being sought for their care as well as foster homes to help the neglected dogs with socialization. Interested persons are asked to call 610-566-1370 or access https://providenceac.org/get-involved/donate/.
“We need neighbors to be on the lookout for dogs in yards, especially those lacking shade, as many yards in Delaware County do,” said Calgiano.
Reports of animals left out in the heat or otherwise neglected may be made to Riggle at 610-566-1370 ext. 214.

Tie her to a cinder block in the hot sun and don’t give her water or food. Lock her up and throw away the key! What piece of dirt!

I’m with you. She deserves to be put in jail for a very long time. She is a sick person to do this. She knew her dogs would die. She’s still on vacation? Unbelievable!! This makes my blood boil!

Come and knock on our door, we will be waiting for you………these dogs were waiting for their help to arrive. How cruel to leave a dog outside with no shade, water or food. The poor akita died so tragically. There’s no logical reason to do what she did. She’s mental to let her animals suffer while she vacations.
Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein says
Hoarding is a mental disorder which isn’t fully addressed when someone is identified as one. They should require them to receive mental help if they are convicted of hoarding. It doesn’t go away on its own. Most are women and they can’t seem to stop this behavior.
Thanks.

Poor babies. I’m glad they’re getting the help they need. How long did the akita suffer before going into seizures? The poor dog. I cried when I read that. :'(

The Akita was outside for at least two days before she began seizing and died. It is very sad.
Thanks.

Yes, it is very sad.

Why is she still on vacation? Why didn’t she come home after they found her pets? She doesn’t deserve any pets and I hope they never allow her to have any. What a sicko!
Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein says
That is a very good question and I have no idea why she didn’t return from her vacation immediately. Perhaps, she feared she would be arrested for animal cruelty when she arrived home but that is only a guess.
Thanks.
People are scum says
If she could afford to pay for a vacation, she can afford someone to look after her pets. No excuse for what she did. Would she do the same to kids if she has any? Take them away too if she does. :'(
Tina Evangelista-Eppenstein says
I have to agree. Even if you can’t afford to pay someone to look after your pets, you either don’t go on vacation or taken them with you. There are more and more places that allow pets. It’s unfathomable why she did this.
Thanks.

I’m so upset about the akita. I have tears running down my face. Why??????? Put her in jail. Please.

I hope she gets locked up and they throw away the key. What person in their right mind goes on vacation and leaves their pets unattended?? What a sicko monster? She’ll probably get off with a misdemeanor and do community service. It’s a joke if you hurt an animal.
