After the public outcry has subsided over the impending culling of deer at Charles Evans Cemetery, the deed has been done. Nine deer were killed during the week of February 15th over two nights.
It took nine shots by marksmen to rid the cemetery of the deer that had been causing damage to the property. Reports of 13 deer has apparently been erroneous since the marksmen checked two other times since the culling and found no evidence of other deer.
Claims of damage to the cemetery’s trees, larger monuments (by rubbing against them) and leaving excrement are the reasons for destroying the deer herd, according to the Reading Eagle article.
I, personally, can’t comprehend how the deer are causing damage to the monuments. Yes, bucks rub their antlers during the rut and mainly on trees. I have never heard of deer rubbing against anything other than wood.
The culling is complete. The deer are gone. This changes the dynamics of the cemetery forever. What once was for many years will never be again.
God forbid another deer steps foot on Charles Evans Cemetery. We now know the outcome- a death sentence for that innocent deer!
