Attendance may have been a little low for the Dog Walk/Car Cruise event held at the First Energy Stadium but it failed to dampen the spirits of the people and their dogs who did make a showing.
This event was held in support of the Reading K9 Unit. Since the city of Reading is in a quandary with their current budget, there has been speculation of removing police officers. You will be happy to know the Reading K9 Unit will not be affected by any cutbacks whatsoever. In fact, the next three dogs are being trained and will be ready for service by the end of 2009! That is great news!
One of the dogs currently being trained was an actual stray living on the streets of York County. Another police dog in training had been tied on top of a roof in the city of Reading. And now these two will be protecting the citizens of Reading.
As Keith Claytor, Vice-President of Friends of the Reading Police K9’s, told me it is great that these dogs finally have a second chance at life and are doing what they are meant to do- protect and be a working dog!
Here are yesterday’s winners from the doggie contest:
Largest- a tie
Luke- a Great Dane ( and he is only 9 months old and growing!)
Dylan- a beautiful Newfoundland
Smallest- another tie
Lola- such a cute Cock-a-Poo
Jackson- another cutie… a Cairn Terrier
Youngest- Lola- 4 1/2 months old
Oldest- Fritz…a very sweet 12 yr. old Weimaraner
Cutest- Buttercup- a sweet mixture of a Spitz and Terrier
Best Behaved- Max …..very handsome German Shephard
Worst Behaved- Malachi (although I didn’t see any signs of bad behavior-haha!…. gorgeous Siberian Husky
Best All-Around Dog- Panzer- Malachi and Panzer are “siblings” (not really, but do come from the same family). Panzer is a big baby and a lap dog……did I mention he is a Rottweiller….so much for stereotypes..
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone for coming out to support the Reading K9 Unit!!
