Carole Scarito, 71, of Douglassville, Pennsylvania was found guilty of six counts of animal cruelty involving five horses, four of which were found dead. Scarito was convicted of failure to provide veterinary care and lack of food. She must pay $900 in fines; however, she is not prohibited from owning animals.
This past March 12, Scarito was cited by the PSPCA Humane Law Enforcement team after discovering four deceased horses and one live horse named Nellie. Nellie was taken to the PSPCA Central PA Center for medical treatment. This center is located in Danville, Mountour County.
Scarito signed over custody of Nellie and she was adopted this past Spring!
Scarito was cited for the emaciation and poor bodily conditions of the deceased and live horses as well as their inappropriate living environment. The PSPCA team and a forensics veterianarian testified to this at Scarito’s trial.
“Nellie has regained her health and is in a loving, permanent home” said PSPCA CEO Jerry Buckley.
The Central PA Center at Danville currently houses nine horses, five of which are under protective custody. The other four are available for adoption.
People need to be aware of the cost involved in having a horse. Buying or adopting one is the initial investment but there are many more costs to consider when taking care of a horse over his/her lifetime. According to the website, http://horses.about.com/od/buyingyourfirsthorse/f/horsekeeping.htm, the Minimum cost per day to keep one horse is $5.01 per day or $1828.65 per year.
Check out the site for a breakdown of the costs.

How is this woman allowed to have animals.? What’s going to stop her from killing again?
Melissa's fight for animals says
Oh my God! This woman should never be allowed to have animals again. She has proven herself to be incapable of properly taking care of horses who I presume died a horrible death. Not one, but four horses are dead because of her and they’re allowing her to have animals again. This is beyond my comprehension and I think this should be reviewed again. It’s already insane cruelty and they’re going to allow her the ability to do it again. This is irrational to me. I don’t get it.
