This is Harriet and she is one of many cats that 1by1catrescue has available for adoption. Harriet is a very refined lady who is on the quiet side. She has a sweet disposition. Harriet is scared of big dogs. But that won’t stop her from wanting lots of love and affection! Won’t you please give her a forever home?
One by One Cat Rescue (www.1by1catrescue.org) is a no-kill, non-profit, all volunteer based organization with the main shelter located in Kutztown. As with all shelters or rescues, they, too, have many cats and kittens up for adoption. With this being kitten season, Deb Hauptmann of 1by1, said they are filled to capacity.
Some of the cats/kittens are housed at the shelter while others live in foster homes and others can be found 7 days a week at PetSmart in Wyomissing. You can search on petfinder.com to see all of their available pets. Just click over from 1by1rescue.org.
If you would like to foster a cat for them, you are required to fill out an application form similar to the adoption form found on their website. You will also need to be interviewed by them. You must be able to provide food, water, clean litter, a safe environment and LOVE to the kitty till adopted. Vet care is paid for by 1by1. They need to know that the person they are entrusting the cat/kitten to will take proper care.
According to Deb, most of their cats are owner turn-ins although they do get some dropped off at their shelter. Very few are strays. They also help out other organizations such as the Humane Society of Berks County, Huntingdon SPCA and Lancaster Humane League. When I asked Deb if she has seen an increase due to the economy, she said she has not. The influx as I had written earlier has to do more with kitten season. But there are always too many cats because we aren’t spaying and neutering our pets enough. That is what will make the difference!
If you are interested in adopting from 1by1, Deb recommends you visit their shelter, a foster home or Petsmart. Spend time with the cats. Get to know them. Deb says to really listen to the adoption counselor’s suggestions. The counselor will be able to give you more information about the cats/kittens. Kathy Walker , breed expert for 1by1, can help you to choose the right breed for you. Not all breeds are the same and aren’t right for all people. The same applies to dogs. This is a lifetime commitment, so you want to be sure of this important decision.
When asked if there was one message Deb wanted to get out to the public, she said and I agree 100% – “Don’t shop – Adopt”. There are too many homeless animals in this world already. There are 6-8 million pets waiting for homes right now in the U.S. Be part of the solution and not the problem.
If you would like to volunteer, you can download their application from their website. Volunteers are not only the backbone of 1by1 but they are the only ones who run the rescue. Please help them out if possible!
You can also sponsor a cat/kitten if you are unable to adopt. For only $10.00 a month, your money will go to a cat’s care. Find out more on their website. I think that’s a great idea!
1by1cat rescue has the following event happening this week:
July 21st- July 26th
At Heat Waves in Kutztown ~ National Massage Week ~ For a good quality brand name of cat food, you get a 10 minute chair massage or $10.00 off a table massage (that sounds good to me!)
To see more of their upcoming events, visit their site at www.1by1catrescue.org. I will be posting more as the events get closer.
Fonzie ~ an adorable 10 week old neutered male. Fonzie loves other cats but doesn’t care too much for dogs. Woudn’t it be great if you could adopt another cat with Fonzie. They could keep each other company!
