Across the country, there are beautiful and unknowingly deadly plants being bought by unsuspecting consumers. They are typically labeled as a Bonsai plant and sold at Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot and Target.
Sadly, most people don’t know this plant, the Sago Palm, is extremely poisonous to your pets and humans alike.
Cyasub, the toxic chemical in the plant often causes permanent neurological damage and liver failure when enough of the poison is absorbed. The seeds are the deadliest part of the plant.
Recently a friend’s daughter found out the hard way when her two-year old beagle mix dog ate the entire plant. The woman had no idea what this seemingly harmless-looking plant could do to her dog. Neither did I.
When she arrived home, her dog was lethargic and not acting like himself. She knew something was very wrong and as she looked around her home, she saw the Sago Palm was gone.
The dog was taken directly to her veterinarian where it was immediately placed on drugs to counteract the effects of the plant.
The 72 hours following this harrowing incident were to be the most crucial time to know if her beloved pet was going to survive or not.
Her dog had liver failure but made it through the 72 hours and was sent home. From the time he arrived home, he started to shake. This is a neurological effect from the deadly seeds.
Many pet parents want others to realize the horrors these plants do to our four-legged best friends. Too many pets are dying because of the Sago palm plant.
The stores that sell this deadly plant need to disclose this information. They don’t. They simply sell it as a palm tree without any warning label. People aren’t aware they’re bringing home a plant that can and does kill.
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s data says 50 to 75 percent of sago palm toxicity cases result in the death of the pet. They also report 68 percent of pets who are treated aggressively and early are reported to survive.
Sadly, despite aggressive and early treatment, this young, loved beagle-mix did not survive.
Please use this as a warning and don’t let this happen to your pet or child.

There are many deadly plants that can kill our pets. I don’t have any pets in my house. Too scared if my dogs should eat them and not knowing what could happen. Better to be safe than sorry. RIP

THat plant seems so harmless. WHy don’t these stores have warning labels on them? I would think they would have a case against the stores for killing their pets.
